Why is gas more expensive in Mexico than the U.S.?

The short answer: supply and infrastructure. While taxes do play a role, they’re not the main reason for the price difference. Mexico imports a large portion of its gasoline - mainly from the U.S. - which adds transportation and logistics costs. In contrast, the U.S. produces and refines most of its own fuel domestically.

Additionally, factors like exchange rates, limited refining capacity in Mexico, and price controls or subsidies affect the final price at the pump. When you remove taxes and subsidies, the base fuel cost in both countries is more comparable - but overall, structural factors make gas more expensive in Mexico.
